Speakers Bureau

The Speakers’ Bureau was created to empower volunteers as ambassadors to inform and educate the greater community. Speakers give “Hunger 101” presentations to civic groups, community organizations, religious groups, schools, and others in order to spread awareness about hunger and to build on that awareness by encouraging action.

The Hunger Education Certification Program offers guidance and training for members of the Speakers’ Bureau. Members must complete the following in order to be certified:

  • Read the Hunger Education Certification Manual
  • Attend a Training Session (3 hours)
  • Complete 10 hrs of hunger-related service (minimum of 2 hrs at the Food Bank)
  • Observe a speaker
  • Pass the take-home Certification Exam

The Food Game: Making Ends Meet

One tool used by speakers is “The Food Game: Making Ends Meet.” This game is interactive, giving participants firsthand experience of the difficulty in securing adequate amounts of food when faced with limited resources. Participants role-play characters facing a variety of situations that affect their ability to obtain enough food for themselves and their families over a simulated 5-week period. Each round, participants must take into account their income, expenses, special circumstances, and changes in their lives when determining how much money they can spend on food. This game is designed people ranging from middle school children through adults.

If you would like to become a member of the Speakers’ Bureau, schedule a speaker to visit your group, or arrange for a session of the Food Game to be played, please fill out the appropriate form below or contact our Volunteer Services Manager either by email or at (919) 865-3022.
